Today Lee Gallacher, from Argosy Close in Warsash, Southampton, was selected to race on board Chernikeeff 3, the Synergia 40 that he raced on board during the Admirals Cup.

Sailing again under the Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club banner, is a team half of whom will have disabilities, providing the opportunity to compete on equal terms with the best sailors in the world during Cowes Week.

In a competitive fleet, the CCYC Sailability teams of Chernikeeff 1 and Chernikeeff 3 held good positions during the Admirals Cup. Crews showed determination and skill and are keen to improve. "The disabled sailors have all reached a high level and none of them have ever sailed at this level before." Stated Andy Green, skipper of Chernikeeff 3, during the Admirals Cup.

Lee commented on his recent return to high level racing, and training with such a high calibre of yachtsman, "It was a fantastic opportunity for me to race with people that I have looked up to for so long, I learnt a lot in the past weeks from Andy and the crew, especially Johnny Morduant. Johnny was tough on me and the team at times but it was what kept us going. I respect him a lot. The teams, even though so many are high level Olympic medallists and Americas Cup Veterans were all forthcoming with tips and really helpful in integrating me into their team. I must admit I found it harder than it used to be before A.S. started taking a grip. I am finding it painful as well as tiring."

Straight after Cowes Week Lee will be off on the Fastnet onboard Supernatural to beat the time that it took them 2 years ago. He is determined to use as much time on the water to train for his own campaign Challenge Sailing Team, which challenges disabilities and the stigma around them. Straight after The Fastnet he is off to Belgium where he is to be wed to his Fiancée, Anja Dhanis and then for a much needed rest and Honeymoon. Upon his return then it is back into the office to secure his title sponsor. Eric Robinson Solicitors in Southampton are among the first to join in his campaign by supporting him for the next 5 years. "Eric Robinson are pleased to be involved in this exciting venture, especially in light of the difficulties Lee Gallacher has had to and continues to battle with. We wish him every success." Stated Iain Thom and Charlotte Poole of Eric Robinson Solicitors.

CST also aims to put together a team of disabled people to race in a series of races next year and is looking for potential team mates to race with him next year. Anyone interested can contact him via the web site.

Lee suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis; In short AS is a painful, progressive, rheumatic disease. It mainly affects the spine but it also affects other joints, tendons and ligaments. Other areas such, as the eyes, lungs, bowel and the heart are also involved. AS restricts his mobility in daily life and will restrict his movement on the boat, although he will be working on the bow of the boat, the most physical position, he is looking forward to it.
